Man, Atlas is so hot.

"She knew--by the way he looked at her, by an instant's drop of his eyelids closing his eyes, by the brief pull of his head striving to lean back and resist, by the faint, half-smiling, half-helpless relaxation of his lips, by the sudden harshness of his arms as he seized her--that it was involuntary, that he had not intended it, and that it was irresistably right for both of them."

(From Kenneth's away message. Thank you, Kenneth.)

The following is from Billy Grahm. Especially during this time of year, remember that this is the essence of Christianity:

"Humility is putting down pride. Smash pride, step on it, crush it, mash it, break it, and above all, expose it--not in the other fellow but in yourself.

"You can break down and thresh out and destroy every mountain of self and every obstacle in your way, if you will just be a worm. Deny yourself if you want to be a worm. To deny self is to disown self.

"Christ who was and is our example was the personification of humility. He came to demonstrate humility to us. And we get the secret of His success and victory when we hear Him cry out in Psalm 22:6, 'But I am a worm and no man.' In other words, Christ took the attitude of a worm.

"A worm is perfectly helpless. It has no strength to fight or protect itself from danger. Whether food for birds or to be trampled underfoot by man, it resigns itself to sacrifice; but a worm is always busy. Hidden away out of sight, it gets little credit for what it does, yet it is the greatest blessing to plant life in the world. It lives entirely for others. A worm is of the earth earthly but it plows its way through the darkness, it feeds and thrives and grows fat on the very earth that brings such trials and heartaches to others.

"I beg of you, Christians, learn the lesson of the worm and humble yourself before God."

This is absolutely ridiculous. The fact that people could actually hold the victim of a terrorist attack accountable for the terrorist attack is sickening. I mean what, did the jury just go "well, we don't have the real criminals here to prosecute, so we'll just punish the victim instead." What's next? Are we going to start prosecuting people whose cars get broken into because they don't have car alarms? Or people whose houses get robbed because they didn't have enough locks on their doors? Or how about people who get injured in a shooting because they weren't wearing bullet proof vests? Those sorts of cases would have just as much legitimacy.

Kishikaisei13: i be who i be nigga

Thursday, September 29, 2005

My opinion that Adelphia is a shitty company was reaffirmed this week, when my cable TV and internet was installed. When I called to set up the installation, I was asked twice if I was interested in extra channels like HBO, and once if I wanted a cable box. I replied no to all three questions. I was instructed to have a check ready in the amount of the first month's bill to give to the cable guy when he arrived.

The day of installation arrived. Now, my apartment looks like this:

----------------------------------------
l``` l ```l ````````l``````` l
l---X```` l```````` l``````` l
l``````` l```````` l``````` l
----------------------------------------

The "X" is where the cable connection originates, in one of the bedroom closets. The cable guy claimed that if he ran cable from there to the farthest room, the picture would be bad so he shouldn't do it. My roommate, who was the one there to let him in, called me to find out what to do. I, of course, knew the guy was full of shit and told him to do it anyway. Additionally, he claimed that he could not put the cable modem anywhere but the closet. This, too, was a blatant lie, but I did not find out about it until I got back to the apartment. Despite my repeated indication that I did not want a cable box, he installed one anyway. He also did not take the check that I was instructed to write.

Upon my arrival, I moved the modem myself into the center room. And what do you know? It worked just fine. And the picture on the TV in the far bedroom was fine too. What did not work, however, was the cable box. Not that I am at all surprised.

We have two explanations for his behavior, neither of which reflects well on his employing company.

1. He knows nothing about the equipment he is paid to install, which would explain his confusion at being asked to run cable across *gasp* three whole rooms! This also requires that he is too stupid to figure out that if cable customers get three TVs hooked up for free with cable installation, and no one in the world has three TVs in the same room, coax cable must do just fine running through several rooms.

2. He didn't want to have to do the work required to run cable accross the apartment, so he tried to get out of it by lying about the limitations of the equipment.

It has to be some combination of both: not only did he not know how to hook up the cable box properly, but he did not bother to make sure it was working.

This all reflects extremely poorly on Adelphia. Either they hire dishonest people or stupid people, and either don't train their employees or don't make sure that their employees know what is going on before sending them into the field.

I hate UCLA housing services. I have had nothing but terrible problems with them. I suspect that the office is actually run by monkeys. They take everyone's housing applications and throw darts at them. The ones that get hit get processed correctly, and the other ones get thrown away.

My UCLA Housing Saga

Freshman year:

I applied for a two-person room in Canyon Point with my best friend at the time, Lauren. We made sure to select all the same living preferences and put each other down as requested roommates so maximize our chances of getting placed together. As I had guaranteed housing because of my scholarship, I assumed it would be a no-brainer to give me the room that I wanted. We were each offered different three-person rooms.

Sophomore year:

No problems, amazingly.

Junior year:

My roommate and I both had the same scholarship so we were guaranteed a spot in the university apartments. However, current students apply into a lottery for university apartments, so we weren't sure what to do. I went down to the housing office to ask. They told me to apply for housing using the dorm housing application. This didn't really make sense since all the preference choices on that applications were for dorms, but I filled it out anyway. Time passed, and I received an e-mail telling me that room signup (for the DORMS) would be happening and giving me a signup number for it. I was confused, since I didn't want to live in the dorms, so I went down to the housing office again to ask. When I told the guy who helped me that I was a Regents' scholar, he told me that i didn't have to do anything and that he was going to call all the regents scholars in to sign up for rooms before they had the lottery. He didn't. A few weeks later my roommate got an email saying that she had been offered a room in one of the apartments. I got nothing. I went to the housing office AGAIN. They told me that my housing offer had been cancelled because I had missed room signup. In the end I had to write a note requesting that my offer be reinstated, despite the fact that it was THEIR FAULT. I got the room I wanted, in the end.

Senior year:

This time the application process went smoothly. I got an email telling me when room signup was and that I would receive my signup number later, but I never received my number. On the day of room signup I called the housing office and asked what the deal was. (It was about 9:30 at this time.) They told me to go on down to room sign up right then and that it would be fine and I could retrieve my number there. When I got there, I got my number and waited around for a while, and finally found out that the signup time for my number was not until 11:30. This was the very last time slot, meaning that I never had a signup number to begin with--they just put me in the last group. By the time I got to sign up, the room type I wanted was gone. So I just signed up for the same kind of room I had this past year. Several weeks later I got an email saying that my housing offer had been terminated because I had failed to make my initial payment before the deadline. Nevermind the fact that I had never received any correspondance regarding this payment. I had expected to receive such information by mail or email, like I did the year before. Apparently a lot of people had this problem. So, I went down to the housing office (my second home) and had to fill out ANOTHER housing application. At this point my offer was reinstated and I made my initial payment. However, I could not choose my room number like I had at room signup. The room I wanted was still available, though, and I was told that I could get it back by submitting a change of assigment request. I did this. Now it is a number of months later and I JUST received an email saying that my request could not be fulfilled. So, the monkeys at housing just ignored my request for an obviously open room that was supposed to be mine anyway, waited around for a few weeks until transfer students were in, put them in my room, and then told me about it. Thanks a lot, housing.

I expect many more problems to come.

A rediscovered nugget of joy:

Dear President Bush,

Thank you for doing so much to educate people regarding God's Law. I
have learned a great deal from you and understand why you would
propose a constitutional amendment ban same sex marriage. As you
said "in the eyes of God marriage is based between a man a woman." I
try to share your knowledge
with as many people as I can. When someone tries to defend the
homosexual relationships, I simply remind them that Leviticus 18:22
clearly states it to be an abomination. End of debate.

I do need some advice from you, however, regarding some other
elements of God's Laws and how to follow them.

1. Leviticus 25:44 states that I may possess slaves, both male and
female, provided they are purchased from neighboring nations. A
friend of mine claims that this applies to Mexicans, but not
Canadians. Can you clarify? Why can't I own Canadians?

2. I would like to sell my daughter into slavery, as sanctioned in
Exodus 21:7. In this day and age, what do you think would be a fair
price for her?

3. I know that I am allowed no contact with a woman while she is in
her period of menstrual uncleanness - Lev.15: 19-24. The problem is
how do I tell? I have tried asking, but most women take offense.

4. When I burn a bull on the altar as a sacrifice, it creates a
pleasing odor for the Lord - Lev.1:9. The problem is with my
neighbors. They claim the odor is not pleasing to them. Should I
smite them?

5. I have a neighbor who insists on working on the Sabbath. Exodus
35:2. clearly states he should be put to death. Am I morally
obligated to kill him myself, or should I call up the police and ask
them to do it?

6. A friend of mine feels that even though eating shellfish is an
abomination - Lev. 11:10, it is a lesser abomination than
homosexuality. I don't agree. Can you settle this? Are
there 'degrees' of abomination?

7. Lev.21:20 states that I may not approach the altar of God if I
have a defect in my sight. I have to admit that I wear reading
glasses. Does my vision have to be 20/20, or is there some wiggle-
room here?

8. Most of my male friends get their hair trimmed, including the
hair around their temples, even though this is expressly forbidden
by Lev. 19:27. How should they die?

9. I know from Lev. 11:6-8 that touching the skin of a dead pig
makes me unclean, but may I still play football if I wear gloves?

10. My uncle has a farm. He violates Lev.19:19 by planting two
different crops in the same field, as does his wife by wearing
garments made of two different kinds of thread (cotton/polyester
blend). He also tends to curse and blaspheme a lot. Is it really
necessary that we go to all the trouble of getting the whole town
together to stone them? Lev.24:10-16. Couldn't we just burn them
to death at a private family affair, like we do with people
who sleep with their in-laws? Lev.20:14

I know you have studied these things extensively and thus enjoy
considerable expertise in such matters, so I am confident you can
help.
haha, how true

THANK you.
a thing about why smart guys can't get women. some quotes:

http://www.bullz-eye.com/relationships/double_your_dating/2005/040701.htm

"REASON #6: THEY FOCUS ON LOGIC INSTEAD OF EMOTION
NEWS JUST IN: Women don't feel ATTRACTION for men who make them THINK.
Women feel ATTRACTION for men who make them FEEL.
So what do most smart guys do when they first meet a woman?
EXACTLY!
They get into a LOGICAL CONVERSATION."

Read: most women are irrational morons. smart men can't get them because the women are stupid.

"Get this: A monkey sitting at a typewriter will type the collected works of Shakespeare before you will make a woman feel ATTRACTION for you by engaging her in logical conversation."

again, the idiocy escapes words

"REASON #7: THEY'RE NOT USED TO THE CHALLENGE OF THE MOMENT
Smart people usually have time to THINK about things."

I beg to differ. Smart people take LESS time to think of the answer than average. I do, anyway.

"REASON #8: THEY THINK THAT DOING "NICE" THINGS IS THE "SMART WAY""

that's because it is.

"ANY jackass can figure out how to kiss a woman's ass.
And guess what?
WOMEN KNOW THIS!
And guess what else?
EVERY WUSSBAG DOES THIS STUFF.
An intelligent guy, in his proud arrogance, will think he's being such the charmer by using this "thoughtful" approach...
...and the woman he is chasing will interpret it as just another Wussy who's trying to MANIPULATE her."

Which wussbags are those? Men are way too lazy. If a guy brought me my favorite flowers and did thoughtful things, etc., i would think it was nice.

"Reason #9: ALWAYS NEEDING TO BE THE EXPERT
Have you ever met a smart guy who always needed to be "right"?
Have you ever met someone who would actually argue with you about something they knew nothing about... and make a fool of themselves because they just couldn't shut their "smart mouths"?"

how true.

"Reason #10: THEY CAN'T DEAL WITH FEAR AND OTHER EMOTIONS
A smart guy's STRENGTH is his MIND.
His WEAKNESS is often his EMOTIONS."

I submit that the man who is immobilized by his emotions is not as smart as he thinks. Dealing with emotions (correctly) is a rational process.

"By carefully studying what the "naturals" did with women... and learning how they "thought" about the topic, I began to realize that success with women wasn't entirely LOGICAL."

Again, this is because most women are irrational. Smart guys shouldn't go after irrational women anyway. Duh.

i always forget people's birthdays. usually i'm pretty sure that i know what date someone's birthday is, but i live in fear that i'm slightly off and that i'll wish them a happy birthday on the wrong day and look like an idiot. so i always have to figure it out in some crafty way so that no one thinks i'm a terrible person for not remembering the birthdays of my closest friends and relatives. other times i have no idea when a person's birthday is and i'm afraid that they might have told me in the past and will expect me to know. so, in the interest of everyone out there who is like me, i have an announcement to make:

my birthday is april 24th. i will be 21. i accept checks, cash, and anime.

this has been a public service announcement by sara's blog.

Things that would have made "million dollar baby" a better movie:
1. If eastwood and swank had a baby in the movie and sold it for a million dollars. then there would have been a real million dollar baby
2. aliens. aliens make all movies better
3. if, instead of disappearing with the implication of taking over a shitty roadside diner, clint eastwood went on a "scream" style rampage against the dirty boxer, swank's family, and all the other retarded people in the movie. they could make a sequel!
4. If swank had been trained by mr. miyagi again instead of eastwood.
5. If she had been killed by kristi swanson putting a stake through her heart instead of euthanasia.
"million dollar baby" is the most horrible movie in the history of the world, with the possible exception of "day after tomorrow" which i have not seen. Here is a summary, and if you don't understand why no one should ever see this movie after reading the summary, you are no longer allowed to read my blog.

tallbladeofgrass (9:53:02 PM): clint eastwood is old
tallbladeofgrass (9:53:07 PM): he trains boxers
tallbladeofgrass (9:53:16 PM): he won't train hillary swank, because she is a girl
tallbladeofgrass (9:53:34 PM): she hangs out around his gym and is annoying until he changes his mind and trains her
tallbladeofgrass (9:53:42 PM): she fights a lot, and is awesome
tallbladeofgrass (9:53:49 PM): knocks everyone out in the first round
tallbladeofgrass (9:54:06 PM): she's on top of the world, having a blast, making lots of money, her life is good
tallbladeofgrass (9:54:25 PM): then she goes to a championship against this evil scary woman, who fights really dirty
tallbladeofgrass (9:55:04 PM): scary woman throws a dirty punch after the bell is run, knocking swank down into a stool that dirty woman's manager has placed sideways
tallbladeofgrass (9:55:15 PM): swank hits her neck on the stool, breaking it
tallbladeofgrass (9:55:24 PM): swank is now paralyzed from the neck down
tallbladeofgrass (9:55:34 PM): lots of scenes of her in the hospital being paralyzed and on a breathing machine
tallbladeofgrass (9:55:45 PM): no further discussion of the dirty fighter
tallbladeofgrass (9:55:58 PM): swank asks eastwood to take her off life support
tallbladeofgrass (9:56:12 PM): he says no, so she bites her tongue to kill herself
tallbladeofgrass (9:56:16 PM): the doctors save her
tallbladeofgrass (9:56:18 PM): she does it again
tallbladeofgrass (9:56:21 PM): the doctors save her again
tallbladeofgrass (9:56:40 PM): eastwood changes his mind, comes in the night, disconnects her breathing machine and gives her a shot of adrenaline
tallbladeofgrass (9:56:42 PM): she dies
tallbladeofgrass (9:56:44 PM): he disappears
tallbladeofgrass (9:56:45 PM): the end
